What is CareerNext?

CareerNext is a unique college support program designed specifically to help students with autism and learning differences. CareerNext students are dual-enrolled in SUNY Schenectady, a highly regarded community college located in the revitalized and exciting city of Schenectady, New York. They take many of the same classes, live in the same dorms and pursue the same certificates and degrees as their peers. But critically, CareerNext students have access to the professional, individualized guidance they need to succeed in college.

Did you have an IEP or 504 plan in high school? Have you tried a standard college program but learned you’ll need some extra support to succeed?

CareerNext students work with a professional and experienced staff to develop and execute an individualized plan that provides the support and guidance they need to take accredited college courses. They also receive residential support focused on developing skills and habits that will allow them to live independently.

Students are dual-enrolled at CareerNext and SUNY Schenectady County Community College and are fully integrated members of the campus community.

Do students stay in the program throughout their college career? Can they exit or transfer?

Students can remain part of the CareerNext program for the entire time they are working to earn a certificate or degree from SUNY Schenectady. At any time during their college career, if they feel confident and ready, they can choose to leave CareerNext and continue their academic program at SUNY Schenectady or transfer as qualified to another college or university.

What can CareerNext students study?

CareerNext students have the opportunity to pursue a wide range of career-oriented programs offered by SUNY Schenectady, like IT, early childhood education and the culinary arts.
